About IIT GATE: What This Admission Is

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a national level entrance test for engineering and science graduates. It is conducted by the IITs and IISc on a rotation basis, and the score is used for admission to M.Tech and PhD programmes and, in many cases, by several public sector companies while hiring engineers.

This page is about the GATE notice from IIT. It tells you what the notice says in plain words and what to do before the last date.

Your GATE score stays valid for a few years, so a good attempt is useful beyond one admission cycle.

Who Should Apply for GATE

The notice asks for Engineering Degree. Students in the final year often ask if they can apply; the notice answers that, so look for the line on Sarkari Result awaited candidates.

For General, OBC, EWS Candidates the fee is ₹2000, and for SC, ST, PH Candidates it is ₹1000. If you claim a fee concession, keep the category or disability certificate ready.

A good rule is to apply only when every eligibility line matches your papers. Close enough is not enough in an admission form.

IIT GATE Dates: How to Plan Your Time

The form opened on 27 Aug 2026 and closes on 05 Oct 2026.

1 day remain. Plan the form, the documents and the fee within the next two or three days and keep the rest as a buffer.

Exam date: 21 Feb 2027. Count back from this day and fix your own weekly targets.

Dates can be extended or changed. We update this page when the organisation does so, but the official notice always shows the final dates.

What Happens After You Apply for GATE

The path after submitting the form is usually like this. The notice of IIT has the exact stages, so use this list only as a guide.

• Application and fee payment
• Entrance test, if the notice has one, or evaluation of the marks of the qualifying exam
• Merit or rank list and the call for counselling or interview
• Document verification with original certificates
• Payment of the admission fee and confirmation of the seat

Watch the official website and your registered mobile number. A missed message is the most common reason for a lost seat.

Mistakes That Cost Students an Admission

• Entering the form on a copy site. The address in the notice is the only safe starting point.
• Uploading a blurred photo or a signature in the wrong size, which the system may accept but the verifying officer will reject
• Writing a name or date of birth in a different spelling from the certificates
• Choosing a category without a valid certificate in the format asked for
• Forgetting to download the final submitted form
• Believing an agent who promises a seat for money. Government admissions never work that way

If something goes wrong, write to the helpline given in the notice and keep a copy of your message.

Getting Ready for the GATE Exam

About 20 weeks are left before the exam. Start with the topics that carry the most marks, then move to the rest.

Solve the previous papers of the same exam under a timer. They show the real level and the way questions are asked. The syllabus and pattern are in the official notice linked on this page.
