Governing bodyConstitutional body under Article 315 of the Constitution of India
TypeA central government body

The Union Public Service Commission is the constitutional body that selects officers for the civil services of the Union. Its roots go back to the Public Service Commission of 1926; after Independence it was given constitutional status and began working as UPSC on 26 January 1950. Its office is at Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi.

The Chairman and Members are appointed by the President of India, and the Constitution protects their tenure so that the Commission can act without pressure. That independence is the reason UPSC selections are seen as the benchmark of fair recruitment in the country.

What UPSC does

  • Conducts examinations for appointment to All India Services and Central Services Group A and B
  • Advises the government on recruitment rules, promotions and disciplinary matters of civil servants
  • Runs the Combined Defence Services and National Defence Academy entrance exams
  • Recruits specialists, scientists and engineers through direct recruitment and Engineering Services

Main UPSC recruitment exams

  • Civil Services Examination (IAS, IPS, IFS and other services) — prelims, mains and interview.
  • Engineering Services Examination (ESE) — for engineering posts in Railways, CPWD, telecom and defence.
  • Combined Defence Services (CDS) and NDA / NA — entry to the armed forces academies.
  • Combined Medical Services (CMS) — for medical officers.
  • CAPF (Assistant Commandant) — for officer posts in central armed police forces.
  • Indian Forest Service, Geo-Scientist and Statistical Services — through separate or combined exams.

How selection works at UPSC

Most UPSC recruitment has three broad stages: a screening or preliminary test, a written main examination and a personality test or interview. Some exams add a medical examination or a physical standard test. Marks from the written test and interview are added to create the final merit list, and service allocation follows rank and preference.

Eligibility in general

A bachelor's degree from a recognised university is the base qualification for the Civil Services Examination; engineering, medical and defence exams have their own requirements. Age limits and the number of attempts depend on category and are stated in every notice, so check the exact cut-off date before applying.

These are general patterns. The exact qualification, age, fee and vacancy details are always in the official notification of that particular year.

UPSC Sarkari Naukri: how to use this page

If you are looking for a government job at UPSC, start with the open vacancies listed above and check the last date first; a form that closes in a few days needs attention before anything else. Then read the eligibility of the post, the fee for your category and the selection stages, because the same organisation can have very different rules for different posts.

For jobs already applied for, use the admit card, city intimation and answer key sections. The result section keeps the merit lists and cut-off notices together, and the syllabus section helps you plan the next attempt. We currently list 2 UPSC update(s) on this page, including 1 job notification(s).

Preparation and application tips for UPSC exams

  • Open the official notification, not just a summary, and note the cut-off date for age and qualification.
  • Keep scanned photo, signature, ID proof, category and education certificates ready in the size the portal asks for.
  • Pay the fee only on the organisation's own payment page and keep the receipt and application number safely.
  • Make a weekly plan around the syllabus and revise it every Sunday.
  • Beware of fake job offers: UPSC never asks for money to give a job through phone calls or messages.

Source and credit

The background above is written in our own words from the official UPSC website (upsc.gov.in) and public information on Wikipedia. All notices, PDFs and forms belong to Union Public Service Commission. We are an independent information website and are not affiliated with UPSC or the Government of India.

UPSC Recruitment: government job notifications

UPSC notifications normally state the name of each post, the number of vacancies category-wise, the qualification, the age limit on a fixed date, the application fee, the selection process and the dates for online applications. Salary is given as per the 7th Pay Commission level-based pay. Read these details before you start filling the form. When a notification is corrected, extended or cancelled, we update the same post and mention the change in its update log instead of creating a second page.

UPSC Admit Card and exam city details

The admit card, also called hall ticket or call letter, is the entry pass to the exam. Most organisations release an exam city intimation slip first, and then the admit card a few days before the exam from the official recruitment portal. You will need your registration number or roll number with date of birth or password. Print it on clear paper, check the name, photograph, exam centre and reporting time, and carry a valid photo ID as the notice says. If any detail is wrong, write to the helpline given on the admit card immediately.

UPSC Result, merit list and cut-off

After the exam and the answer key window, the organisation publishes the result as a PDF list of roll numbers or as a login-based score card. For a multi-stage exam, a result of one stage only shortlists you for the next, so keep an eye on the next date. The cut-off marks depend on the difficulty of the paper, the number of vacancies and the reservation category. Save a copy of your score card and keep your documents ready for verification. Our result posts show what the result means and what to do next.

UPSC Answer key and objections

For objective exams an answer key is often released on the official site. You can compare your marked responses, estimate your score and, where the organisation allows it, raise an objection within the stated period, usually with a small fee per question and supporting proof. Remember that a provisional answer key can change; the final key and the result are what count. Negative marking, if any, is given in the exam notice.

Syllabus, exam pattern and admissions

Knowing the syllabus and pattern helps you decide how much time to give each subject. Check the number of questions, marks, time limit, negative marking and the language of the paper. Where UPSC also publishes admissions or other public notices, we list them under the matching headings above so that everything from the organisation is in one place.
