About SSC
| Full name | Staff Selection Commission |
|---|---|
| Short name | SSC |
| Established | 1975 |
| Headquarters | New Delhi |
| Governing body | Department of Personnel and Training, Government of India |
| Type | A central government body |
| Official website | ssc.gov.in |
The Staff Selection Commission began life in 1975 as the Subordinate Services Commission and took its present name in 1977. It is an attached office of the Department of Personnel and Training and works out of New Delhi, with regional offices in several parts of the country that handle exam centres, admit cards and candidate queries.
In simple terms, SSC is the agency that fills most non-technical and many technical Group B and Group C posts in ministries, departments, paramilitary forces and other central offices. Lakhs of graduates, Class 12 pass and Class 10 pass candidates compete in its exams every year, which is why an SSC notice is one of the most searched government job announcements in India.
What SSC does
- Recruits Group B (non-gazetted) and Group C staff for central government ministries and departments
- Selects constables and sub-inspectors for Central Armed Police Forces, Delhi Police and the Assam Rifles
- Conducts stenographer, junior engineer and selection post examinations
- Publishes an annual exam calendar so candidates can plan preparation
Main SSC recruitment exams
- Combined Graduate Level (CGL) — for graduate-level posts such as Inspector, Assistant Section Officer, Auditor and Tax Assistant.
- Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) — for 10+2 posts such as Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant and Data Entry Operator.
- Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) and Havaldar — for Class 10 level posts in central offices and CBIC / CBN.
- GD Constable — for constable posts in BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, Assam Rifles and SSF.
- Junior Engineer and Stenographer — for technical and secretarial cadres.
- Delhi Police and CPO Sub-Inspector — for police officer posts.
How selection works at SSC
Most SSC exams follow a computer-based tier system. Tier 1 is a qualifying objective test, Tier 2 is a deeper objective paper, and depending on the post a descriptive paper, skill or typing test, physical standard and endurance tests and document verification follow. Marks in each stage are added as per the notice, and final selection depends on the merit list and the preferences you fill.
Eligibility in general
Educational qualification depends on the post: Class 10 for MTS, Class 12 for CHSL and GD, and a bachelor's degree for CGL. The usual age band is 18 to 27 or 18 to 30 years, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities as per government rules. Always read the age and qualification cut-off date given in the notice.
These are general patterns. The exact qualification, age, fee and vacancy details are always in the official notification of that particular year.
SSC Sarkari Naukri: how to use this page
If you are looking for a government job at SSC, start with the open vacancies listed above and check the last date first; a form that closes in a few days needs attention before anything else. Then read the eligibility of the post, the fee for your category and the selection stages, because the same organisation can have very different rules for different posts.
For jobs already applied for, use the admit card, city intimation and answer key sections. The result section keeps the merit lists and cut-off notices together, and the syllabus section helps you plan the next attempt. We currently list 4 SSC update(s) on this page, including 1 job notification(s).
Preparation and application tips for SSC exams
- Open the official notification, not just a summary, and note the cut-off date for age and qualification.
- Keep scanned photo, signature, ID proof, category and education certificates ready in the size the portal asks for.
- Pay the fee only on the organisation's own payment page and keep the receipt and application number safely.
- Attempt previous year papers under exam time limits.
- Beware of fake job offers: SSC never asks for money to give a job through phone calls or messages.

SSC Recruitment: government job notifications
SSC notifications normally state the name of each post, the number of vacancies category-wise, the qualification, the age limit on a fixed date, the application fee, the selection process and the dates for online applications. Salary is given as per the 7th Pay Commission level-based pay. Small things such as the cut-off date for age decide whether you are eligible, so check them first. When a notification is corrected, extended or cancelled, we update the same post and mention the change in its update log instead of creating a second page.
SSC Admit Card and exam city details
The admit card, also called hall ticket or call letter, is the entry pass to the exam. Most organisations release an exam city intimation slip first, and then the admit card a few days before the exam from the official recruitment portal. You will need your registration number or roll number with date of birth or password. Print it on clear paper, check the name, photograph, exam centre and reporting time, and carry a valid photo ID as the notice says. Reach the centre well before the gate closing time; late entry is generally not allowed.
SSC Result, merit list and cut-off
After the exam and the answer key window, the organisation publishes the result as a PDF list of roll numbers or as a login-based score card. For a multi-stage exam, a result of one stage only shortlists you for the next, so keep an eye on the next date. The cut-off marks depend on the difficulty of the paper, the number of vacancies and the reservation category. Save a copy of your score card and keep your documents ready for verification. If a revised result is issued later, we update the same post.
SSC Answer key and objections
For objective exams an answer key is often released on the official site. You can compare your marked responses, estimate your score and, where the organisation allows it, raise an objection within the stated period, usually with a small fee per question and supporting proof. Remember that a provisional answer key can change; the final key and the result are what count. Negative marking, if any, is given in the exam notice.
Syllabus, exam pattern and admissions
Knowing the syllabus and pattern helps you decide how much time to give each subject. Check the number of questions, marks, time limit, negative marking and the language of the paper. Where SSC also publishes admissions or other public notices, we list them under the matching headings above so that everything from the organisation is in one place.
